Alta Pusteria
Holidays in San Candido in Val Pusteria
San CandidoThe holiday village San Candido (Innichen), at 1.173 m above sea level, is the vivacious and busy centre of Alta Badia and is situated at the confluence of the Val di Sesto valley into the Val Pusteria valley. The market place is surrounded by middle-class houses, hotels restaurants and cafés. Here we also find the collegiate church of San Candido, also called the dome, it belongs to one of the most important Roman sacral buildings in the whole alpine area. The three-nave basilica was constructed onto a predecessor church and has a marvellous south porch. The monumental Roman crucifixion group is also worth a visit as it is seen as one of the nicest in South Tyrol. The collegiate museum close by, exhibits baroque religious objects, precious manuscripts, book illustrations and sculptures. The museum Dolomythos – the wonderful world of the Dolomites – is interesting from a biological point of view. Fossils, minerals, presentation boards and films present the Dolomites as unique habitat. A forum of international photography and the art room Café Mitterhofer round off the cultural offers of San Candido. In addition to the cultural treasures San Candido is naturally also a well visited recreation and winter sport resort with nice hotels, modern sporting facilities and well marked walks and hiking trails. The 4-seat-chairlift Monte Baranci transports hikers and skiers up to the Monte Baranci refuge at 1.500 m height. Four other lifts and a 3 km long toboggan/sledge run round off the family winter fun. In summer children enjoy a ride down to the valley on the summer toboggan run fun-bob. The whole year round the adventure swimming pool Aquafun is open for family, fun and wellness. |
