Holidays in Castelrotto

Castelrotto

The holiday resort Castelrotto (Kastelruth) lies at a height of 1.060 m above sea level and is situated on a very sunny low mountain range terrace in the east of the Sciliar area and is its main municipality.

From a historical point of view, the origin of this holiday resort is a Roman castle that was built on a hill in the forest near today’s centre. Also the name derives from the Latin denomination from around 100 A.D. “de loco Castellorupto“, freely translated this means “location of the destroyed castle”. Around 1200 AD the castle Castelrotto was built on the same spot but was later also destroyed. In the remaining keep two chapels were built, a Via Crucis leads up to them from the village. Up until the 14th century the population of Castelrotto was Rhaeto-Romanic.

Today Castelrotto is a famous and well visited holiday resort, one of the reasons for this is the local folk music group “Kastelruther Spatzen” that has carried the name of their home into the world with their music.
Once a year the fans of folk music of the whole German-speaking area meet for the “Spatzenfest“ concert in Castelrotto.
