Municipal Museum of Merano
| | |
There is currently work on the expansion and renovation of the new home of the Municipal Museum of Merano at the old Palace Steinach, located in the square at the end of Portici near the parish church of St. Nicholas. Until the transfer to its new home, a small selection of the objects of the museum is exhibited at the premises of the "Aquila Rossa". The municipal museum is only a small part of the rich heritage museum funds. It gives an idea of the type of collections preserved at the museum and presents works of art and curious and interesting items related to the history of the city. In the ethnographic section you can find a Saltner maskof the old guard of vineyards, an old "crib", Animated Passion, with more than 200 figures in wood, numerous signs and boxes, in which the corporations of trades guarded statutes and documents, work instruments, precious horn accessories for women's hairstyles, etc. The medieval art is represented by several sculptures of saints of the XIV and XV century, including the statue of St. Nicholas, patron of the city. Of the Baroque era, we find works of art with paintings by artists such as Stefan Kessler, Michelangelo Unterberger and Martin Knöller. Among the twentieth century we find, among other things, paintings by Friedrich Wasmann, a famous portrait painter and Leo Putz. Two old paintings of the view of Merano give you an idea of what it was like to live in Merano at the beginning of the city, before its development as a spa city. Among the curious and rare items, we recall the model of typewriter invented by Peter Mitterhofer and funeral mask of Napoleon I, a gift from a guest during his stay in Merano. In the prehistoric section on the third floor you can currently see two Menhirs, discovered in 1942 in Lagundo, a deer horn votive bearing an inscription in characters from the Rhaetian hill Tartsch at Malles, the findings of a deposit of bronzes at Talacci Silandro and other interesting artefacts.
