Val Venosta
Holidays in Silandro in Val Venosta
SilandroSilandro (Schlanders) lies at 722 m above sea level and is the main municipality of the Val Venosta valley. Orchards, sweet chestnuts and the particular flora of the dry mountain Sonnenberg (sunny mountain), are characteristic for its landscape. The late-Gothic parish church of Assumption is enthroned above the village, it has the highest spire in South Tyrol and is slightly tilted to the east. From the point of view of art history the spittle church is the most important building of the holidy area (the key can be collected from the caretaker at the citizens’s home St. Nicholas). The church has frescos of the 13th and 16th century. The castle Schlandersburg to the north east of the village under the Sonnenberg mountain is a beautiful Renaissance building of the year 1600. The modern tourist resort offers its guests a lot. In the old village centre of Silandro you will find a pretty pedestrian zone with many nice shops, restaurants and bars. Silandro also offers many sporting and recreational activities. The surroundings of Silandro also offer interesting sights. In Corces for example we find the picturesque church of St. Egidius, in Covelano stands the St. Martin church with two wing altars and also the St. Walburga church, the nicest Gothic building in the Val Venosta valley. In Coldrano the most important sight is the castle Coldrano. After its restoration, it now houses a convention centre and cultural centre. In 1840 the little village Vezzano was buried under a mudflow. Nine years later today’s St. Nicholas church was built on the rubble. |
