Val Venosta
Holidays in Sluderno in Val Venosta
SludernoIn Sluderno (Schluderns) at 920 m a.s.l., the south starts, as you tend to say in the Val Venosta valley, because Sluderno lies in a very sunny area protected from the wind. The castle Coira is enthroned high above the village, it is one of the most interesting South Tyrolean buildings of the Middle Ages, the inside and the outside have been maintained perfectly. The castle was built in the year 1255 by the bishop of Coira as fortress against the rebellious governors of Mazia, who nevertheless managed to take over the castle in 1297. When the governors of Mazia finally died out, the castle went into the possession of the counts Trapp, they are still the owners today and live in the castle. The late-Gothic arcade is very beautiful with its marble columns and excellently maintained frescos of the late 16th century. The armoury which is a private collection, is one of the most complete and precious in the whole of Europe. The Renaissance castle is one of the largest sights in South Tyrol and is open to the public. The castle can be reached on foot in a few minutes from Sluderno following a steep footpath, or by car to the car park under the main entrance. On the so called Ganglegg hill behind Sluderno a prehistoric settlement was found which can be visited as archaeological park. The findings of this settlement are from the Bronze and Iron Age, they are exhibited in the Vintschger Museum in Sluderno. This museum is accessible for visitors in a wheelchair without assistance by means of a lift at the back of the building. |
