The holiday village Avelengo (Hafling) lies at 1.290 meters above sea level on a beautiful high plateau above Merano.

Avelengo has especially become known because of its horses, the Haflinger horses. The good natured Haflinger horses of Avelengo with their typical blond manes are quite small and sturdy, they were bred at the end of the 19th century for work in the high mountains and can still be frequently found in Avelengo and in the rest of South Tyrol.
Today the Haflinger horses are very popular in the riding sport and every year on Easter Monday the Haflinger peasant horse race (Haflinger Bauerngalopprennen) takes place at the famous racecourse of Merano, close to Avelengo.

The vast high plateau also comprises the beautiful family friendly hiking and skiing resort Merano 2000 (Meran 2000). Modern lifts, a summer toboggan bob run and a lot of sun make it an ideal ski resort for families.
Many hiking trails let you discover the surroundings, the Mountain Cinema “Knottnkino”, a panoramic view point with seats like in a cinema, close to Verano, gives you a magnificent view over the whole Val d’Adige valley.
It is a very popular excursion that can be recommended.
