Train station of Merano (Meran)
|
The train station of Merano has a good accessibility and a toilet that is accessible for disabled people. Positioned in the west of the city, the train station is one of the most important mobility centres together with the bus station, it is the biggest station of the whole railway line. In the entrance hall you find the desk area, a newspaper stand, a tobacco shop, a cafe with restaurant and terrace and a cash dispenser. The station also has a bike rental. All city bus lines and the following important interurban lines are connected to the station: line 10 (Scena - Merano), line 109 (Val d’Ultimo valley - Merano), line 110 (Val Passiria - Merano), line 403 (Tirolo - Merano) and line 411 (Postal - Lana - Marlengo - Merano). You can find further information and bus lines on the pages of the SAD (local public transport company). The Old Town centre with the arched lanes, the world famous Spa Promenade (Kurpromenade), the Kurhaus (spa building) and the Merano Thermal Baths are less than 1 km away and can be reached by a footpath with good accessibility. The spa town Merano (325m a.s.l.) is famous because of its mild Mediterranean climate. It has many parks, the Tappeiner Promenade (Tappeinerweg) and the very well accessible Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle. The city bus line 15 (Merano - Thurnstein) takes you to the accessible starting point of the Tappeiner Promenade in Quarazze which has gravel floor covering but is nearly completely flat. The path has a magnificent view over the spa town (unfortunately the bus line 15 does not have a retractable ramp). The SASA line 1, 1b and 4, connects the station with Castle Trauttmansdorff that houses the well accessible Museum of Tourism "Touriseum", surrounded by the "most beautiful gardens of Italy". (busses of the line 4 are partly equipped with retractable ramps and have reserved places for passengers in a wheelchair). Right in front of the train station of Merano a big market takes place every Friday, here you can bargain over the prices. In the Maia Bassa district, close to the train station of Maia Bassa, one of the nicest racecourses of Italy is located, throughout the year many horse races with high prize money take place here. The cathedral square of Merano has well accessible public toilets for disabled people, other accessible toilets can be found at the end of the gallery on the Winter Promenade, on the Passiria Promenade close to the children’s playground and in the Via Galilei street.
