Mining Museum in a Grain Store
| | |
Copper has been mined for over half a millennium in Predoi in the Ahrn Valley. In autumn 2000 a mining museum opened in the village of Predoi (Prettau) in the Valle Aurina valley (Ahrntal), accommodated in the granary “Kornkasten” of the former copper mine, where the miners’ food provisions were stored.
The various museum stations focus on different themes revolving around the work of extracting ore and its processing (from tracking down the ore to molten copper). On this basis twelve working spaces have been set up. Social themes are also explored (i.e., wages, beliefs and superstitions, privileges accorded to miners, the miners’ wives...).
The museum features a multimedia collection donated by the Enzenberg family. Contemporary film clips, wooden models, paintings, mine maps, books, documents and mining implements allow visitors to relive the social history of mining in the Ahrn Valley. In addition, at the click of a mouse visitors can become acquainted with the dangers lurking in the mine, the miners’ fears of ghosts underground, the piety this all inspired, as well as the various occupational groups in the Virtual Chamber of Wonders.
